In more detail

Search engines have answered simple questions directly for years: the weather, sports scores, opening hours, unit conversions and short definitions in a featured snippet. The local pack lets people call a business or get directions without visiting its website. AI features push this further by writing a full answer to more complex questions.

Zero-click doesn't always mean zero value. A searcher who sees your business named in an AI answer, or your phone number in a local result, may call, visit or search for you by name later. Those outcomes are real but harder to attribute than a click.

The effect varies a lot by query type:

  • Quick facts and definitions are the most likely to be answered without a click.
  • Local and service searches often end in a call or a map direction rather than a site visit.
  • Commercial and comparison searches, such as choosing a supplier or buying something considered, still send many clicks because people want detail, prices and proof.

In Search Console, zero-click behaviour shows up as impressions growing faster than clicks, and a lower click-through rate for affected queries.

Why it matters when hiring an agency

If an agency reports only on organic sessions, a rise in zero-click searches can make good work look like failure, or hide a real drop. Ask them to report impressions, calls, direction requests, branded searches and leads alongside clicks. A good agency will also point effort towards searches where people still need to visit a site to decide, and won't promise traffic figures that ignore how search results are changing.
