What llms.txt is, and what it isn't
llms.txt is a short Markdown file that tells AI agents what your site is and where its most useful pages are. It's cheap to add and does no harm, but it's an informal proposal: Google hasn't said it uses the file, and a perfect llms.txt won't make up for pages that AI crawlers can't reach. Check that first with the AI Crawler Access Checker.

What is llms.txt?
A proposed standard for a Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI agents a short summary of your site and a curated list of links to your most useful pages. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 and updated in 2026. It's optional and informal.
Does llms.txt help my Google rankings or AI Overviews?
Google hasn't said it uses llms.txt for Search, AI Overviews or AI Mode. Treat it as a low-cost extra for AI agents and assistants that look for it, not as a ranking or visibility fix. Crawlable pages, clear content and a good reputation matter far more.
What does a valid llms.txt need?
Only an H1 title is required. The format then expects a blockquote summary, optional paragraphs or lists without headings, and sections under H2 headings, each a list of links written as - [Name](url): optional notes. A section called Optional holds links an agent can skip.
How is the draft made?
We read your homepage's title and meta description for the heading and summary, then take up to 40 pages from your XML sitemap, read their titles and descriptions, and group them by the first part of their URL. Legal pages go under Optional. Edit it before you publish: add key facts, remove pages that don't help, and check every line.
Where do I put the file?
Save it as a plain-text file called llms.txt at the root of your site, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Many WordPress SEO plugins and site builders can generate and host one for you.
What's the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt tells AI agents what's worth reading. They do different jobs, and llms.txt doesn't grant or block access to anything.
