</script>Why structured data matters
Search engines read schema markup to understand who you are, where you are and what a page offers. It's also one of the clearest ways to describe your business to AI search tools. More in the AI SEO hub.
The checks follow Google Search Central's structured data guides for each type. Markup should only describe what visitors can see on the page.

Frequently asked questions
What is schema markup?
Schema markup (structured data) is code that describes what a page is about in a format search engines read reliably: a business with an address and phone number, an article with an author and date, a product with a price. JSON-LD is the format Google recommends.
Where do I put the JSON-LD?
Paste the <script type="application/ld+json"> block into the page's HTML, usually in the <head>. Most content management systems have a field or plugin for custom code in the head.
Does schema markup improve rankings?
Not directly. It helps search engines understand a page and can make it eligible for rich results, such as review stars or product details, which can improve clicks. Google decides when to show rich results.
Which schema type should I use?
Use Organization (or LocalBusiness if customers visit you or you serve a local area) on your homepage, Article on blog posts, Product on product pages, BreadcrumbList for breadcrumb trails and Event for events. Only mark up what's visible on the page.
Is this the same as Google's Rich Results Test?
No. This tool checks JSON syntax and the main required and recommended properties quickly in your browser. Before launch, also test the live URL with Google's Rich Results Test and check Search Console's enhancement reports.
Can I still use FAQ markup?
You can add FAQPage markup, and it still describes the page, but Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of well-known government and health sites. Don't expect FAQ dropdowns in results for most sites.
