Using keyword density sensibly
Density is a quick way to spot copy that leans too hard on one phrase, or a draft that never actually names its topic. It isn't a target. Better signals are whether the page answers the searcher's question and covers the topic in depth. Learn more about keyword research and keyword cannibalisation.

Frequently asked questions
What is keyword density?
The share of words on a page taken up by a keyword or phrase. A two-word phrase used 5 times in 500 words has a density of 2%.
What's the ideal keyword density?
There isn't one, and Google doesn't use one. Write naturally for the reader, use the main topic in the title, heading and opening, and cover related questions. Very high repetition can read as keyword stuffing.
Why are some words left out?
Common words like "the", "and" and "for" are hidden by default so the topics stand out. Tick "Include common words" to count them too.
Can I check a live page?
Paste the page's text, or its HTML source (Ctrl+U in most browsers). Tags, scripts and styles are stripped before counting. For a full page check, use the Free SEO Audit.
